JAKARTA, Indonesia – Dumai Express 10 ferry, overloaded while sailing from Batam near Singapore to Dumai island in Riau. Police officials told the press that the probable cause why Indonesian ferry sinks is overloading. This recent Indonesian ferry disaster has killed 29 people and there were at least 245 passengers survived from the tragedy.
Meanwhile, some reports claim 17 people are missing off Indonesia’s Riau islands. The Indonesian ferry has 13 crew and a total of 278 people listed in their book. But early reports by the Transport Ministry official told in a news conference that the ferry has only boarded 273 people.
Director general of sea transportation Sunaryo stated that “The disparity between the manifest and reality is large, it’s such a classic case.” It has also been a difficult task for them to continue the rescue operation because of the unstable weather condition and huge waves which are hammering the rescuers in the sea.
